When someone refers to BCBS or Blue Cross Blue Shield, they generally believe they are referring to or working with one large insurance provider. Blue Cross Blue Shield is actually a group of thirty-six independently owned smaller insurance companies. These companies combine to create one of the largest insurance providers in the nation. Like other insurance companies, Blue Cross Blue Shield offers a variety of insurance plans with different coverage levels. They are categorized by colors, including Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum plans.
Each plan level provides different coverage benefits, varying deductibles, and out-of-pocket costs. The lowest level plans, bronze plans, typically cover a lower percentage of medical expenses (around 60%) and have higher deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses such as co-pays and pharmacy costs. Lower monthly premiums offset the higher up-front fees of the bronze plan.
On the other end of the scale are platinum plans. Platinum plans(which are not available in all states) cover roughly 80% of medical costs and have lower deductibles and out-of-pocket costs. However, the added coverage benefits of platinum plans are accompanied by higher (sometimes significantly)monthly premiums. All insurance plans provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield include mental health coverage, and most cover a portion of the expenses related to addiction treatment.

What Treatment Does BCBS Insurance Cover?

Inpatient coverage also applies to many of the services offered in a partial hospitalization program.
