As unbelievable as it sounds, there was a time when detoxification was considered a criminal offense. People were actually arrested for it and placed in jail. Fortunately, the view of detoxification has changed over time. In the 1970s, state laws began to change, recognizing alcoholism as a disease that required treatment rather than punishment. The National Institute for Health defines detoxification as the management of acute intoxication and withdrawal.
Using drugs and alcohol regularly changes the pathways in your brain; your body becomes dependent on these substances. When you stop using drugs and alcohol, your body will stage a rebellion. Depending on how long you have been using, how much you have been using, and what you have been using, the rebellion can be pretty dangerous. Because of this, it is vital that you detox under supervision to ensure your safety. Detox is a medical intervention.
At our detox center in Huntington Beach, we understand the dangers of detoxification, and we know how to keep you safe. As you detox, our clinical staff will monitor your vital signs and overall health to ensure that you are progressing through detox safely. If needed, we will prescribe medication to help your body get through the process. Detoxification is the first step on the road to recovery, and we are here to partner with you to get you through the early days.
Detox is the very beginning of your journey in recovery, and unfortunately, it’s not fun. By completing detox in a safe and supported environment, you increase your chances for success in sobriety. You will be surrounded by staff that will be there not just to manage your symptoms but to help you remember why you decided to stop in the first place. Detoxing can make you want to use drugs or alcohol again. It’s why so many return to using when they first try to get sober. We will be there to cheer you on and get you ready for the next steps. You will then be prepared to do the work of addressing the psychological, social, and spiritual manifestations of addiction. However, you will have to rid the body of the substances that would have prevented you from doing so. Beginning your journey at our Orange County detox will create a firm foundation for your recovery.

When you use a drug, it produces a specific effect. For example, if you use opioids, they reduce any pain you are having and give you a feeling of euphoria. Opioids also cause constipation. When you stop using opioids, your body will begin to withdraw, and the effects will be somewhat opposite. You will experience muscle aches, bone pain, mood swings, anxiety, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and a host of other symptoms. If you’ve been using multiple drugs, your body will experience withdrawal symptoms for each one of the drugs you’ve used. If you’ve been using stimulants like cocaine, opioids and depressants like alcohol, your body will be thoroughly confused. At our Orange County detox center, we begin by assessing you and your drug use so that we can best treat you. The legal or illegal status of a drug does not necessarily dictate what you will experience during withdrawal. While it might seem like an illegal drug such as cocaine would be more dangerous during withdrawal, alcohol is the most dangerous. If not appropriately managed, alcohol withdrawal can be fatal. Detox typically lasts two to ten days, depending on factors such as:
Some drugs may take longer to leave your system, and this will be addressed during your treatment planning. As you might imagine, some withdrawal symptoms are common across all drugs. During withdrawal from any substance, you can expect to experience anxiety, restlessness, and perspiration. Most drugs will affect your blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature. Cocaine and other stimulants will often cause more psychological symptoms. Benzodiazepines, such as Valium, and other depressants, can result in your being hyperactive. Withdrawing from depressants, including alcohol, can result in seizures which can be fatal. By detoxing at our alcohol detox in Orange County, California, you ensure a safer and more manageable withdrawal.
Ocean Coast Recovery is not the typical substance abuse provider. We believe that no matter what, a person should be guided to the help they need. Entering detox can be overwhelming. You may be scared, nervous, or even angry. It is normal to have a rainbow of emotions when you arrive at detox. The important thing is to keep moving forward. When you arrive at our Orange County Detox, you will begin by answering many questions and providing us with a lot of information. To best support you during your withdrawal, we need to learn about you, your history, drug use, and more. It will feel intrusive, and you will likely be frustrated by all of the questions. It’s okay to be frustrated, but remember that your honest answers will help us support you in the safest way possible. By knowing the facts about your drug use and your overall health, we can partner with you on a treatment plan that provides you with the greatest chance at long-term recovery.
