Drug and alcohol use and abuse profoundly impact the brain of someone with an addiction. Those who struggle with the disease of addiction will sometimes do and say things that cause emotional harm to those they love the most. Those closest to people with addiction often suffer the most; for various reasons. Family and friends must watch their loved ones as they transform and change in self-destructive and harmful ways. Feeling as though they have lost a relationship with a loved one is one of the reasons family members can benefit significantly from family therapy and support groups at a Huntington Beach rehab center, like Ocean Coast Recovery Center.

Family members of someone with a substance use disorder may feel alone and, in some cases, angry at themselves. They may also feel like they failed as a parent or spouses and seek reassurance about their emotions. It is crucial for family members to find support from others who can help them understand their loved one’s substance use.
Addiction is often called a family disease because one family member’s addiction inevitably has a dramatic effect on the entire family. When family members attend therapy sessions or peer support groups, it affects the family as a whole. Family therapy and support groups are highly beneficial in helping members of the family heal from the pain and dysfunction caused by addiction. It also increases the chance that their loved ones will seek help for their addiction and maintain sobriety and long-term recovery.
Ocean Coast Recovery is not the typical substance abuse provider. We believe that no matter what, a person should be guided to the help they need. Our program works with most health insurance carriers to help lower any out-of-pocket costs that could be associated with treatment. Our goal is to get you on your path to recovery as quickly and safely as possible.
While individual therapy programs focus on the individual’s behaviors, thoughts, and emotions, family therapy focuses on the entire family’s relationships. Family therapy aims to understand and validate all family members’ experiences while bringing clarity to all relationships and repairing strained communication. A trained family therapist will explore with the family members how substance use is embedded in a cycle of interaction within the family.
Also, family therapists can educate about substance use for the whole family and support family members in reducing unhelpful behaviors, such as enabling, while increasing effective behaviors. Many researchers believe that family therapy helps repair the family relationship, assists with family behavioral change, and improves family engagement. Family therapy can occur in various settings, including private offices or addiction treatment programs in Huntington Beach.
When family members have a loved one struggling with substance abuse, loneliness is one of the most common challenges they face. At times feelings of loneliness are coupled with stronger emotions of depression or anger. The anger friends and family members feel can be directed in different ways. Sometimes it is directed at the individual struggling with addiction, and sometimes it is turned inward.
Family members sometimes find themselves angry because they feel their loved one’s addiction is their fault or that they may be the reason their loved one cannot get or stay sober. Family therapy, as a part of addiction treatment, helps family members get the support that is crucial to understanding their loved one’s substance use disorder. It can also help reduce anxiety and frustrations by helping family members understand that their loved one’s addiction is likely something beyond their control.
We understand that the disease of addiction has significant physical, social, and emotional consequences for the individuals seeking addiction and their families and significant others whom the disease has impacted. At our addiction and family therapy rehab program, we believe the family is an essential component of your loved one’s recovery. Therefore we seek to involve family members in addiction treatment and throughout the recovery process.
In addition to family therapy, several family support groups are available to support family members with a loved one in addiction treatment. Examples of a few popular family support groups are described below.
Nar-Anon is one example of a well-known support group for family members of addicts. Nar-Anon support groups provide a confidential, safe and welcoming space where family members of addicts can freely and openly share their experiences and hope for their loved ones. Perhaps the most important element of Nar-Anon meetings is to help family members know (and understand) that they are not alone. Nar-Anon groups are based on the 12-step support group concept, where members are encouraged to obtain a sponsor as part of their work with the group.
12-step support groups for family members of addicts are not necessarily affiliated with any religion but, like other 12-step groups, are spiritual in their format and meeting style. By attending family support group meetings like Nar-Anon, family members will learn more about the disease of addiction and the tools they can use to implement an honest and consistent approach when talking to their loved ones about their addictive behavior.
Al-Anon is a support group for people (family and friends) affected by another person’s addiction to alcohol. Al-Anon groups are commonly composed of family members of alcoholics; however, friends of alcoholics are also welcome to attend and participate.
Like the peer support program by the same name for people recovering from substance use disorders, the SMART program is also available for families who need help and support. SMART Recovery Friends & Family is a secular, science-based alternative to Nar-Anon and other 12-step-based programs with a spiritual focus. Based on SMART Recovery and CRAFT tools, SMART Recovery Friends & Family is a program that aims to teach friends and family non-confrontational and self-protection tools that they can use to help their addicted loved ones as they seek recovery. SMART Recovery Friends and family differs from a 12-step approach because it is a four-point program.
In addition to the programs listed above, other programs are designed for family members with addicted loved ones. PAL (Parents of Addicted Loved Ones) aims to address issues including enabling and co-dependency for parents with an addicted child. Support groups for siblings of addicts focus on repairing strained and broken relationships. There are also grief-centered support groups, including GRASP, that are designed to help families who have lost a family member from complications of an addiction-related overdose.
Convincing your loved one to seek treatment is only part of the battle. The next step is to find an appropriate evidence-based program treatment program with the best therapeutic models to suit their treatment needs.
Addiction is a chronic, life-long disease that affects each person individually, and therefore, the best treatment programs are designed with the individual and not the disease in mind. We offer a wide variety of treatment programs designed to treat your loved one’s addiction and help them maintain sobriety long-term. We also understand the essential role that family plays in maintaining lasting sobriety. We work to ensure all family members have access to the vital help they need as well.
